Y2 - Maven Steer
This series offers a glimpse into the origins of the materials and processes behind our gloves.
Let’s take a look at our Steerhide leather, which we call “Maven Steer” or Y2. Our Maven Steer is produced in Japan. The tanneries we work with source their foundational material, the hide, from countries around the world, including the United States.
Maven Leather is made from cattle that have typically reached full maturity. It features a strong and durable surface and is considered a pro grade, high quality leather. Many of the same qualities found in kip leather are present in steer hide. One of the biggest differences is that steer hide may show more signs of aging, such as stretching, nicks, or scratches from the cow’s life. You may also notice more visible pores in the hide. This is not a knock on its quality. It is simply a fact that the longer a mammal lives, the more it grows, experiences wear, and collects scars.
Because of the age and structure of the hide, steer hide and kip leather may absorb dye differently. Each color has its own recipe, developed through extensive research, to help the leather achieve its final appearance. The process of turning a raw hide into finished leather is long and complex. During this process, some steer hides can end up feeling and performing just like kip leather.
We encourage players not to get too caught up in the kip versus steer hide debate. A few years ago, I bought my first electric guitar. The music store owner told me to pick five guitars off the wall based on appearance. Then he asked me to close my eyes while he handed each one to me. I played the same chord on each guitar, and by the end, I knew exactly which one I wanted.
It is the same with gloves. Try ours on when you get the chance. You might be surprised by what feels best. Whether it is made from kip or steer hide, both are excellent choices for advanced play.
